OB Bears First KBO Game

斗山OB베어스대MBC청룡

OB Bears vs. MBC Blue Dragons
March 28, 1982
Dongdaemun Stadium, Seoul

Starting Pitchers
OB - Park, Chul-Soon (박철순)
MBC - Lee, Kwang-kwon (이광권)

Recap
Coming off an emotional and dramatic victory from the inaugural KBO game, MBC looked set to continue right where they left off, getting to Bears starting pitcher Park for one run in the first inning. OB, however, comes back to tie the game in the top of the second. The game remains tied until the top of the fifth.

The Bears number three batter, Yoon, Dong-kyun (윤동균), broke the one all tie in the fifth and OB went on to score two more runs in the inning. The Blue Dragons came back with one more in the bottom of the inning, which would be their last run of the game. Lee, Hong-bum (이홍범), added a solo shot in the sixth to make it 5-2. The ninth inning saw the Bears add three more runs on back-to-back homers by Shin and Yang. Park took the mound once again in the 9th to close out the game and give him a complete game victory.

This was a game dominated by the Bears both on the mound and at the plate, and three players really stood out, starting pitcher Park, Chul-soon (박철순), Shin, Kyong-sik (신경식) and Yang, Se-jong(양세종).

Despite getting off to a shaky start and giving up the run in the first inning, Park settled down and didn't give up another until the fifth and that was all MBC could manage. Back from the US minor leagues (Double A El Paso Diablos), Park showed that he may well be worth his high price tag; he is one of the highest paid players in the league. After the game Park also commented that he hope to win 20 games this season. This statement turns out to be slightly prophetic, as he goes on to set the Korean league record for consecutive wins by a pitcher. He is also named the league's MVP this season.

At the plate it was Shin, Kyong-sik and Yang, Se-jong who powered the Bears offence, going a combined 7 for 10 with 6 RBIs. Batting fifth, Shin, Kyong-sik went 3-5 with 4 RBIs, including a two-run home run and a two-run triple. The number six batter for OB, Yang, Se-jong went 4-5, including a home run.

I was not able to find out the number of errors in the game for each team, however, MBC had at least one error, which lead to a run for OB. Once again, please forgive the romanization of Korean names. If a standard ever is agreed upon, it will make things much easier.

I hope that you enjoy this and if you know anymore information that is not included, feel free to let me know.

To the Doosan fans out there: 최강 두산!
